From 30 January to 2 February 2014 in Toledo it was held an international symposium on "The entorno musical del Greco", sponsored by El Greco 2014 Foundation, within the activities for the fourth centenary of the death of the great cretan painter. The proceedings gather papers investigating the musical and artistic riches that treasured the cities where El Greco, lived with particular attention to Toledo.
In the past three decades many musicologists have studied the musical legacy of a period – which deserves to be valued and so universally diffused– as it is the paintings of El Greco. El Greco is here a starting point that allows us to study its musical environment, the "soundtrack" who illustrated so extraordinary artistic production.
Although we are barely aware, there is no doubt that El Greco heard the music of his time, the same way that the influence of the Italian painting of his time is present in his work. Also we'll try to know the music that the cretan painter found on his way through Venice, Rome, El Escorial and Toledo.
